You have heard people say "stop the boats", but did you ever wonder what started the boats in the first place?

How did Brexit start the small boat problem?

The UK no longer has access to the Eurodac database or Europol to check if someone has claimed asylum elsewhere before arriving here, but even if they did, the UK no longer has any agreement in place to return migrants to the EU. Despite the rhetoric of “taking back control” of borders, Brexit actually created a loophole that is now being exploited by criminal gangs. Brexit also introduced enhanced security on the Eurotunnel route, pushing smugglers into the dangerous option of crossing by boat. These dangerous crossings are an international problem- the UK does not necessarily need to rejoin Europe to stop them, but the problem requires honesty about why it started and a supranational response to tackle the situation.

Julio is a Rasta from Mauritius, a small island nation east of Madagascar. He was a talented young footballer, but he suffered discrimination and was targeted by police violence due to his ethnicity and religion.

The descendants of slavery from Africa do not have equal rights or opportunities in Mauritius. People who have been classified as part of the “General Population” are outside of the main three communities who hold power, and they lack political representation.

In this interview, Julio tells us about his experiences of growing up on the island and about the persecution that forced him to leave. We also talk about what it was like to come to the UK and the challenges of making a new life in a new land.

Free comic-book workshop for creative writing skills with Upside Comics and Refugee Radio. First Tuesday of the month starting from Tuesday 5th August, from 4.30-6pm. Ages 13 and up at the Jubilee Library, Brighton. Also suitable for those who are learning English as a second language, and refugees are welcome. No need to book in advance- it is fine to just drop in on the day.
